Our customers are often asking us for the signs that their website is dated needs a redesign. There are some telltale signs that every website will display which show you that you could do with a redesign. In this article, we’ll go through five of the most common signs that you should consider redesigning your website.

1. Not Mobile-Optimised or Responsive

Mobile is the dominant platform for searches with 48% of buyers using a smartphone to start searching with a search engine. We’ve all been on a train travelling to work or somewhere, and been searching companies on our phone. We all know how frustrating it to find a website on your phone, and not be able to actually read the text. You have to then zoom in, and you’ll probably click onto another page by accident. But there are so many individuals that know this and have experienced it, yet haven’t updated their own website.

2. High Bounce Rates

A bounce rate is defined as the number of users that leave the page that they entered on, without interacting with anything. Put simply; it is when someone clicks onto your website, reads a few paragraphs of your content, and maybe scrolls down the page, and then exits your site. They don’t interact with your company any further.

If you have a high bounce rate, then it could be a sign that the UX and UI (User Experience and User Interface) of the site needs updating. It could also mean that the description given on Google is misleading and doesn’t match the content on the page visitors land on. Make sure that all landing pages are content rich and match the description from the search engine.

3. Users Are Confused By Your Navigation

A report about web usability shows that after landing on your website, 50% of users will go to the navigation bar to orientate themselves. This stat shows how important the navigation bar on your website is. It’s important that visitors to your website know immediately how to use your site, where they are, and where they should go next. If your menu is hidden or difficult to see or use, then it could be hindering progress and stopping visitors becoming paying customers.

4. Long Load Times

Another sign that your website is in need of redesigning is the loading time. There are a few reasons why your website will take a long time to load. If your image files are large, or the hosting / server isn’t optimised. Most of the reasons will be corrected with a new website. The website designer will ensure the new site is optimised, and quick to load.

If it is taking over 3 seconds to load, then stats show that you’ll lose 53% of customers. This is a huge percentage of lost business, and it is SO easy to fix. Long load times is your website screaming at you that it needs an update. Small businesses simply can’t afford to be losing over half of its website visitors and potential leads over a few seconds.

5. It Looks dated

Unfortunately, most people judge the book by it’s cover. So if your website doesn’t wow them, and looks old, the truth is, they’ll be immediately put off. With so many websites available to your customers, yours needs to stand out in a positive way. If it doesn’t impress, it’s probable that your visitors will go elsewhere. A simple website redesign that uses the latest design trends will encourage your visitors to spend longer on the site, improve your brand awareness and gain the trust of your customers.

Final thoughts

Your website is your shop window and is what customers will use when researching your products and in the buying journey. Your website needs to promote trust and a sense of confidence, which filters down to customers. Having an old website that is slow, confusing or dated will hold you back and it also affects your rankings. Google takes all the things we have talked about into account, and you’ll rank poorly if, for example.
