Before the pandemic, working remotely wasn’t top of mind, or was an earned privilege. But since the pandemic forced everyone around the world to stay indoors, remote working was the only option left.

The pandemic forced people to perform a workplace experiment which was unheard of by many before COVID-19 hit. Almost a year and a half later, now we can fully access the pros and cons of remote working.

A survey of 765 small business owners conducted by Simply business concluded that almost 82% suffered from mental health problems in the last 12 months.

While lesser distractions, a flexible work schedule, no commuting and less stress are some of the advantages of remote working, there are some major disadvantages too. A study of more than 3000 employees called 'Covid-19 and Working from Home Survey' reveals almost 40% of the people believe that working from home has created a negative impact on their mental health.

Setting boundaries in these difficult times is of utmost importance as only then will you be able to achieve satisfaction both in your personal and professional life.

How to Switch off from Work and Set Boundaries?
 1. Follow a schedule

While working from home, the most important thing is to follow a proper schedule every day. It should involve things that you used to do when going to the office.

A schedule may involve anything, showering every day and getting a coffee or doing some yoga before starting working, will set the right tone for the day. A fixed schedule will not only make you more productive but will also give you the motivation to perform better.

The only way to prevent time waste is to start and finish your work on time. Losing track of time is not unusual in a relaxing environment. Punctuality brings a sense of discipline and also reduces stress and anxiety about work management. Create an office-life environment at home where there are no distractions. Making a to-do list in the morning helps avoid procrastination and lethargy. Time management is the key to balancing work and leisure activities effectively.

2. Avoid checking your phone at all times

Since the pandemic began, many people have reported that their screen time has hit the skies. Research conducted by business support company NordVPN Teams shows that the average time an employee works from home has increased by two and a half hours.

Independent research from a company that supports businesses in virtual team-leading experiences, Wildgoose, 55% of UK employees say they have been expected to work long hours outside their regular hours while working from home, and 74% have suffered burnout and anxiety during the pandemic.

For your mental well-being, you need to communicate with your team and set clear expectations. Working outside of normal working hours daily will harm your mental health.

If you do not want to face personal struggles, it is necessary to avoid checking your phone/ laptop for work emails constantly. Mental peace can only be achieved if you give priority to both your personal and professional life.

 3. Find a leisure activity

To detach yourself from work, perform an activity that excites your soul. You should have something creative on your platter which you look up to at the end of the day. It could be anything from painting, cooking, listening to music or reading. Such an activity opens new horizons and removes mundanity.

 4. Take Out Time for a Workout

Working out is much more important now than ever as we have nowhere to go on weekdays. A workout doesn't only mean rigorous HIIT. Going for a walk, cleaning your house or even playing your favourite sport classifies as working out.

A workout routine not only helps in staying fit and avoiding health problems but also, stimulates focus and improves mood. The people who work out tend to live a well-balanced lifestyle both physically and mentally. While exercising the body discharges chemicals called endorphins which trigger a positive effect in the body.

 5. Take breaks

A little time away from your desk every once in a while or after every long meeting can help boost focus and productivity. When your brain gets its well-deserved rest, then it tends to be more creative.
